A lot of fight ...

The scream of the racing engine was upon them all at once, with Shooter, the deranged chopper, jumping and jerking like a bucking bronco, and Captain Olympia riding him like a rodeo champion. They smashed into a building, then bounced off a streetlight, and still the dance continued, neither giving an inch.

“Never mind, Freddie,” Machine Ranger said. “Captain Olympia just arrived.”

“Another spectacular entrance?” Freddie said.

“Yes, as always. Ooh! He sure has a lot of fight in him.”

“Which one do you mean?” Ben said.

“Yes,” answered the Machine Ranger.

There was always that one teacher ...

... who really had your number.

Jake?”

The other students started to laugh.

“Jake?”

“Uh … Ms. Jensen?”

“Are you alright, Jake?”

“Yeah … sure … I'm okay.”

“Is there something happening outside that's more interesting than our lesson?”

“There has to be,” another student said.

The classroom roared with laughter.

“Alright … alright,” the teacher said. “Let's get back to business.”

“I'm sorry,” Jake said. “I guess I was … I'm paying attention now. Sorry.”

“That's alright—just this once.” She smiled. “There is a whole wide world out there … it's that way for everyone, you know. Even me.”

Jake looked consoled.

“I just try,” she said, “not to get caught staring mindlessly out the window.”

A disabled combat veteran, turned superhero?

I know, they're already superheroes.

But in our story ...

Hey!” The Rustler said. “Who’s there?” He drew an intimidating pistol in each hand, from under his duster coat. “Show yourself!”

“I’m right here!” A big man in a green and gunmetal suit strode into sight, broken glass and building debris crunching under his feet. “I didn’t mean to startle you, pardner. Real sorry—if I did.”

“You done nuthin’ of the sort,” The Rustler said. “You better stop worrying about me, Machine Ranger—and start worrying about yourself.”

“Me? Worry? Why would I …”

The Rustler started to unload his pistols on the Machine Ranger, but the hail of bullets only sparked and pinged off his metal suit.

Soon The Rustler’s pistols clicked empty.

“You about done, Rustler?”

“Just until I reload, Machine Head.”

The Rustler’s sidekick revved aggressively, and strained against the cowboy.

Machine Ranger pointed his arms straight ahead, at The Rustler. “Yeah … about reloading …” The silvery barrels of the Gatling machine guns encircling his upper arms whirred around a few times, and then clicked to a stop. “Don’t do that. You’re under arrest, tumbleweed breath.”

Machine Ranger on Machine Ranger ...

You see, I came to realize that, although I’m kind of stuck with my injuries, being handicappedyou know, being compromised … being limited, as a person, and as a manTHAT I realized was MY choice. And I chose not to go there. I actually figured I could do something about it.”

“I see.”

“Do you see? It’s my work.”

“Oh … with the robots and everything?”

“Yes, that’s it. And the nanotechnology. And everything else.”

“Better living through technology, huh?”

“Exactly. It’s my dream to be able to help all the others,
hurt like me, get back to

“The battlefield?” she said. “For more fighting?”

“Well, I …”

Meet the black-hearted cowboy, and his evil steed of chrome ...

An alarm was ringing in the bank.

“Heh heh heh heh,” snickered a raspy voice from the midst of the dust cloud. “Beautiful. Just beautiful … if I do say so myself.” His accent was cowboy. He whistled loudly. “Shooter! Come on, boy! I got a job for you—get in here!”

He was answered by the eruption of a big v-twin engine roaring to life.

The rumble approached him, growing ever louder, the closer it got.

“Shooter! Blow away all this dust, so I can see what in tarnation I’m doin’.”

The cackling engine revved up a few times, and then tached all the way out—and held it there.

Within a few moments, the exhaust blowing out of the screaming motor had cleared most of the dust away.

“ALRIGHT, SHOOTER!!! ALRIGHT!!! THAT’LL DO!!!”

The engine revved down.

A tall, lanky man in a long black duster coat and cowboy hat walked up to the snarling motorcycle, and gave it a pat on its gleaming black chrome gas tank. “That’s a good boy, Shooter. Good boy.”

The bike growled affectionately under his touch.

“That’s right. Shooter and The Rustler—pardners ‘till the end. Which doesn’t look like it’s going to be coming anytime soon now, does it? Heh heh heh heh heh.”

The cycle matched his evil laughter with it’s own, mechanical version of the same.

“Alright! Enough messing around here—let’s go get that loot, boy!”

Got a war hammer wielding, villainous Viking?

We do!

CRUNCH!

The car-smashing figure walked through the aura of a streetlight, on the way to his next victim.

“Unbelievable,” Jake said. “A Viking?”

The large man’s black breastplate armor and horned helmet shone under the light. His long red hair and red cape flowed in his wake like fire from a falling star.

He stopped next to a car, raised something in his hand high overhead, and then hurled it down into the hapless driving machine.

CRUNCH!

The window glass exploded into the street and onto the sidewalk as the car was flattened to the pavement.

“That looks like good cover,” Jake said, jumping behind a hedge he’d discerned in the darkness. Peeking around the side of it, he watched in stunned disbelief as the Viking assessed the total destruction, grunted in satisfaction, and then strutted down the line to the next parked car.

CRUNCH!

Another car bit the dust.

Suddenly, Jake heard something that sounded like a jet, rushing in their direction.

CRASH!
