Nobody loves you like mom does ...

Jake! I’m home, honey!”

“I’m in my room, Mom!”

“Doing your homework?”

“Uh … well, mostly …” He looked over at his backpack, as an acknowledgment of the undone homework within, and the little white lie he was proffering.

“No TV or video games until it’s done, okay? And no comic books, either.”

“Yeah Mom.” He closed the comic book in his hand, and set it down next to him on the bed. “Guess it’s time for some homework … right after I get into the zone.” He folded his hands behind his head, laid back into his pillow, and closed his eyes.

“Jake! What happened to dinner? Don’t tell me you forgot again!”

Jake’s eyes popped open. “Oh man … I can't believe I …”

“Remember when we talked this morning?” she said. “I was depending on you, Jakey.”

“Great—I’m dead. I sure am glad I’m in here, and she’s out there. I’d be in for a lecture, for sure.”

The doorknob turned a couple times.

“Jakey, you unlock this door right now. You know how I feel about you locking yourself in your room.”

He sighed.

Jake … now!”

“Coming, Mom. Just a second.” He got up and let her in.

“You know, you could collapse in here, so you’d need your mother, and I wouldn’t be able to get in and help you. I’d have to call the fire department, and get them to come chop the door down.”

“Sorry … I guess I just forgot.”

“Imagine if you were just lying there, unconscious, in your underwear. Wouldn’t that be an embarrassing scene, Jakey?”

“Generally, yes. But … why would I be passed out in my underwear?”

“Exhaustion from studying?”

He grinned.

“I was being optimistic.”

“Studying in my underwear?”

“Studying your pants off.”

“Well, just so you know, Mom … I try not to work myself quite that hard.”

“Oh. I guess I should have known from the grades.”

“But on the bright side, it’ll be a lot less embarrassing when the fire department chops the door down—if I have my pants on, right?”

She shook her head, and smiled. “Just don’t lock yourself in, like I said. Alright?”

“Alright.”

“And now, you can make dinner up to me. I’ll call. You can go pick it up. Pepperoni and extra cheese?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“We’ll try again with the casserole tomorrow night, okay?”
